Political infighting putting Taiwan on brink of war

Civil war in Taiwan is brewing as verbal violence between the “pan-blue” and “pan-green” camps has escalated and heated up. Physical confrontation between their followers has also increased. Taiwan’s first family members have also received threats to their lives and have to stay abroad. All this indicates that Taiwan is heading for chaos, which is a stepping stone for imposing martial law and triggering war in the Taiwan Strait.

Meanwhile, recent developments in the Taiwan Strait are worrying and deserve serious attention. China last month, for the first time, rejected a port call visit to Hong Kong by U.S. Pacific warships while Chinese navy made a landmark visit to Japan on the same day. These two episodes show that (1) China has snubbed the U.S. for slapping President Chen Shui-bian only on the wrist for drifting toward de jure independence for Taiwan; (2) China’s navy is capable of weakening U.S. naval superiority in this region and inflicting costly damages to Taiwan.

Without question, President Chen is maneuvering at all cost to provoke confrontation between U.S. and China, just in order to regain power for the DPP in the upcoming legislative and presidential elections. For him and the DPP, the end justifies the means. So we should not be surprised when Chen will someday raise the slogan “U.S. Go Home!” to show his followers that he has the guts to stand up against Uncle Sam and to go down in Taiwan history as the one and only true Taiwanese hero!
