Office workers in Beijing stuck in traffic for nearly 2 hours daily

Office workers in Beijing City spent on average one hour and 55 minutes in traffic jams during weekdays in 2013, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport announced yesterday.

According to the commission, this latest statistic suggests that office workers have to spend 20 more minutes in traffic each weekday compared to statistics from 2012.

Based on the commission's report, the number of trips people take to travel in and out of the area within the 6th Ring Road in Beijing City reached 30.99 million in 2013, a 660,000 increase compared to the number from 2012. The numbers, according to the commission, both excluded the number of pedestrians traveling in and out of the area.

According to the commission's report, even though the Beijing City officials continued to control the number of motor vehicles, the amount still increased by 236,000 in 2013.

As for vehicle speeds, the commission said the average speed during rush hour in Beijing City was about 25.8 kilometers per hour, which is an improvement compared to 2012.

The commission's report said that the percentage of Beijing City citizens who take the subway system rose to 20.6 percent, a 3.8-percent increase compared to 2012.
