China hits back at US in row over NYT reporter's departure

BEIJING--China on Friday hit back at Washington's condemnation of its treatment of foreign journalists, as tensions rise over a New York Times reporter who left Beijing after not receiving a visa.

The case of reporter Austin Ramzy, who departed Beijing for Taipei on Thursday, has sparked protests from the White House and elsewhere that China is seeking to retaliate against news organizations such as the Times and financial news agency Bloomberg that have published investigations into the family wealth and connections of its top leaders.

“China does not accept the unjustifiable accusations by the U.S. side, and demands the U.S. side to respect facts and take cautious words and acts,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement reported Friday by the official Xinhua News Agency.

Hong added Washington must behave in a way that was more “conducive to media exchanges and mutual trust between the two countries”.

Hong's sharp retort came after the White House said it was “deeply concerned that foreign journalists in China continue to face restrictions” following Ramzy's departure for Taipei, where he will report while continuing to seek a visa for mainland China.

Ramzy, who had been based in China for more than six years, left Time magazine in mid-2013 to work for the New York Times.

'Forced out'

But Chinese officials had not yet granted him a new visa before his previous one expired, effectively obliging him to leave Beijing.

“China is forcing out Austin Ramzy today after 6.5 years,” Times China correspondent Ed Wong wrote Thursday on Twitter.

Ramzy confirmed his arrival in Taipei via Twitter Thursday night. In an earlier message, he wrote: “Sad to be leaving Beijing. Hope I can return soon.”

Ramzy's departure comes a month after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden raised the issue of China's treatment of foreign journalists privately with Chinese leaders during a visit to Beijing.

Beijing has blocked the websites of both the Times and Bloomberg after they published investigations in 2012 into the family wealth of former premier Wen Jiabao and President Xi Jinping, respectively.

Authorities also reportedly conducted unannounced “inspections” of Bloomberg's offices in Beijing and Shanghai last month and demanded an apology from its editor-in-chief amid a controversy over an unpublished article on the government ties of a Chinese billionaire.

To Richard, maybe China forgets that the debtor is the one that holds all the cards. The US can just tell China to shove it and not pay it back.

Then who is going to buy enough T-bills to keep the US economy afloat? When there are not enough buyers for the T-bills, the inflation will increase like Hitler's Germany. With long overdue natural disasters to strike major economic center like California, the US need all the handouts it can get. Europe itself is in very bad shape, and I don't think they will be forthcoming with any financial aides since no much has come out of the US's coffer to help them out with their current financial woes. Japan has already parked almost all of its foreign exchange reserves in dollar, and it is not generating any more trade surplus. So, the Jap can't afford to bank roll Uncle Sam bankruptcies any more. China will soon be your only chance to survival. So, shut up when they say so.

Sensationalism, competition in the market place for the printed media, personal fame and more importantly pleasing the management and the general public are the motivations for most of the "reporters".

Dog bites man is not news while man bites dog help sell newspaper.

Freedom of speech is greatly abused for personal gain.

For a country that was founded on genocides of natives and slavery of kidnapped Africans and with a national media that can tolerate racist genocidal remarks such as "kill all the Chinese and not to repay the debts", it's about time for all the peace-loving people on the planet to reevaluate the fundamental value of the fake democracy and to reject using the greenbacks that are in truth absolutely worthless token of neo-imperialism and neo-colonialism, likened to a wolf dressed in grandmother's skirts, but with its hairy tails being exposed!

Well I have no more respect for the Americans than I do for the ignorance of the Chinese mainlanders. Is it not obvious that the true issue is about international standards regarding freedom of information. The rules must apply to all equally not some, some of the time when it suits the needs of government to fool the stupid and uneducated people of their respective countries. Only an uneducated, probably [...] would make such a brash statement about a loan (due to such restrictions on information, as seen in China) that could easily not be repaid and crush China's economy even more than their communist rhetoric has already. Where's the 10% GDP...oh that's right it is now less than 7% in just 2 years due to international business fleeing from China like there's a plague due to the ignorance and corruption of the communist system. Take a good look at Russia in the 90's because that’s where China’s heading even if your government will lie to your face up until the last second before it collapses. But if none of that rings true for you with your obvious lack of education and common sense, than let me give you another example: China's over inflated housing market, whole cities sit empty. Remind you of another country whose economy crashed due to a similar problem in let’s say 2008. So next time you feel like jumping up and down waving your hands and lashing out like a 3 yr old child perhaps you should take a look at history. As for Hitler's Germany they also started claiming land they had no right to and finally when enough was enough the world came together despite the hardships, kicked the living s**t out of them. So to you Richard I say good luck when it all comes crashing down, hope your lack of common sense and reason will find you on the frontline. :)

Kerry should study up on Chinese ways... he has no idea who he is dealing with ... and Japan absolutely no love lost, Japan ''dislikes'' US ... and Korea would be so much better off with out US - in fact the whole entire area Korean/Japan/China would be so much better off without US there and so would the rest of the world.

These responses to this article are truly hilarious, and show just what a deep and underlying inferiority complex we are dealing with here in terms of China and its relations with the rest of the world. An inferiority complex which translates to feelings of superiority haha...so pathetic and childish and such acrimonious hatred here in these remarks, really classic, oh and classy too. I’m not sure why I am even replying here at all, but just to point out that if you want to take a position on the world stage as equals, then discussion should be warranted...China would not be where it is right now if it wasn't for the United States and we will all have to work together to heal the global economy. The US acts in the world China just takes and sucks everything up into the great Communist Party...talk to the common man in China about what it feels like to have the boot jack of the Communist Party and its sycophants standing on your neck, and why it's imperative to have a free media. These people are probably descendants of the Chinese colonizers in Taiwan, just move back to China and enjoy your freedom over there without your reporters and genocide and peace loving citizens haha...we'll see what happens when China's economy goes into the tank, because it will and soon, it's the nature of capitalism but you've all read Marx you should know that. Racists too haha Jap...just so funny the visceral hatred of the US born out of deep-seated inferiority and insecurity. Hey a little criticism never hurt anyone, these reporters can help you become more confident in your country and your way of life, don't feel so inferior.
