Shanghai population now overshadows Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The permanent resident population in Shanghai increased to 23.8 million by the end of 2012, more than the entire population of Taiwan, which is around 23.32 million, according to a recent report.

The birth rate in Shanghai is 0.26 out of 1,000, said CNA. This is the first time in the past 19 years that population growth was driven by births instead of immigrants, the report stated.

The population in 2012 gained 330,000 people compared to the population in 2011.

Officials said the population growth will reach a minor peak in 2013, according to CNA.

The increase is mainly based on increased births and the growth in the number of women within the population.

CNA said even though the number of women is increasing, the gender ratio between men and women is still not balanced.

The officials said besides the growth factors driven by birth and total women in the population, the number of immigrants is still increasing, according to CNA.
