BEIJING--State media say a serial killer in southwestern China's Yunnan province has been sentenced to death for murdering 11 people.
The official Xinhua News Agency says a court in Kunming city found Zhang Yongming, 56, guilty on Saturday of killing the 11 in Jinning county between 2008 and 2012. He showed no remorse in court.
Xinhua says Zhang strangled his victims and used various methods including dismembering and burning the bodies to destroy evidence. It says he had been sentenced to death in 1979 for another homicide but was released after his sentence was reduced.
Xinhua earlier said authorities fired or disciplined 12 police officers — including two police chiefs — for inadequately investigating the murders.

"There are now 127 schools under investigation in the metropolitan region for complaints about offenses that are sexual in nature," prosecutor Sabas Chahuan said in a statement.
Last week, Chilean authorities had said 59 schools in Santiago were under investigation.
