Tsai calls for central government to assist in Yunlin disasters

TAIPEI,Taiwan -- Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday urged the central government to provide all necessary assistance to cope with the problems caused by the fires at the petrochemical complex in southwestern Yunlin County.

When visiting residents at the area she said dealing an industrial incident of such a scale at the manufacturing facilities of the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) is beyond the capability of a county government.

Tsai said governments at the central and county level should join hands to help victims at the Mailiao area in Yunlin.

Many farmers and fishermen complained to Tsai about the damages to their crops and fish ponds,

Tsai said the incident should serve as a warning to the government for a need to quickly establish a nationwide mechanism to effectively deal with large-scale man-made disasters.

She said government officials should not ignore the sense of insecurity of people in other regions, including residents in Taipei area that is not far from the sites of three nuclear power plants.

After making a public apology over the successive fires, top executives of the FPG reaffirmed their promise to make compensation for agricultural and fishery damages.

Meanwhile, the ranking of Formosa Plastics Corp., a core enterprise in the FPG, has slid to the 30th place from 13 in terms of corporate citizen image.

The survey by the CommonWealth magazine covers the key criteria of corporate governance, enterprise commitment, social participation, and environmental protection.

FPG executives said they humbly accepted the new survey results and promised to strive for continuous improvement.

Leading corporations ranked high in the survey included Delta Electronics, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Chunghwa Telecom, Compal, Taiwan Mobile, E.Sun Financial Holding, Asustek, Macronix International, Uni-President Chain Store, and Wistron.

Before the two massive fires in the past two weeks in Yunlin, FPG companies were fined close to NT$7 million involving 20 cases violating environmental protection regulations at various manufacturing plants in 2009.
