ECFA due after early harvest lists exchanged: economics minister

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan and China will be able to sign a planned economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) after exchanging early harvest lists, Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang said Wednesday.

"Chances are high that the ECFA can be signed in June, when negotiators of the two sides hold the fifth round of systematic negotiations," Shih said.

Shih said he expected the two sides would have to hold talks once or twice before exchanging early harvest lists.

Meanwhile, Taiwan and China will hold the second round of talks on the proposed agreement next week in Taipei.

Shih said the early harvest list drawn up by his ministry includes between 400 and 500 items from local industries vulnerable to the tariff-concession ECFA, ranging from petrochemical and textile products to automobile components and panels.
