Shanghai mayor vows to ensure safe World Expo

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai is stepping up security precautions and safety management to ensure that the World Expo is trouble-free when it opens in May for tens of millions of expected visitors, the city's mayor said Tuesday.

“Without safety and security, there would be no successful Expo to speak of,” Han Zheng told local legislators gathered for their annual session.

The city of 20 million is stepping up safety inspections, improving food and drug safety precautions and improving its crime-fighting ahead of the six-month long event, he said.

The Expo opens May 1 and runs for six months. So far, security preparations have been low-key compared with those ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
