China floods continue as 13 are killed in northeast

BEIJING -- Thirteen people have been killed and another six are missing after floodwaters swept through northeastern China, state media said Thursday, as the country struggles with its worst floods in a decade.

Torrential rain has cut water, electricity and telecommunications services in parts of Yongji county in Jilin province, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing local officials.

Xinhua reported Wednesday that 200 rescue workers had been sent to Kouqian town in Yongji county to reach 30,000 residents thought to be trapped after a nearby reservoir overflowed.

The local train station was also surrounded by water with over 80 people trapped inside, it said.

Factories and houses have been submerged by floods that have reached highs of three meters (10 feet) in some places and residents are trying to escape to higher buildings, the official China News Service reported Wednesday.
