China's last D-Day veteran dead at 91

Huang Tingxin died on November 11 in his home in eastern China's Zhejiang province, Xinhua news agency said.

The cause of his death was not given, but Huang had suffered from Parkinson's disease in recent years, it said.

The former navy veteran, who was trained at China's Qingdao Naval Academy, served on the British escort carrier HMS Searcher when it took part in the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, it said.

Huang was one of 24 young naval officers that left China in 1942 to study and fight in Britain, Xinhua said.

He was made a knight in France's Legion of Honour, the country's highest civilian distinction, in 2006, it said.
