3 kids die in school cafeteria collapse in China

BEIJING — An elementary school cafeteria in northern China collapsed under heavy snow, killing three students and injuring 28 others, state media reported Thursday.

Two girls and a boy from the Longfeng Primary School in Mingguang town in Hebei province died Wednesday evening after the dining hall caved in as they ate, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The injured children were transferred to a local hospital.

Local government officials issued a notice Wednesday night closing all elementary and middle schools in surrounding Yongnian county for two days in order to conduct building safety checks, the report said.

Heavy snow hit major parts of northern China on Thursday, causing highway closures and flight cancellations. In the capital Beijing, dozens of flights were canceled and hundreds postponed because of poor weather conditions.
