Taiwan sends blankets to Sichuan quake survivors

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Red Cross Society of the Republic of China has donated comforters to survivors of the Sichuan earthquake in mainland China to help them get through the first winter since the disaster, an executive of the organization said yesterday.

The organization on Monday presented 2,120 double-sized comforters, each weighing three kilograms, to its Sichuan counterpart which will help to distribute the covers to those in need, the executive said.

Sichuan Province was devastated by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck May 12, with the epicenter located in Wenchuan County of Sichuan’s Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.

According to China’s official figures, as of Nov. 20, the death toll from the quake was at least 69,180, with 17,398 missing and the injured numbering 374,008.
