Official: Macau's ex-consumer chief found hanged

Alexandre Ho, also a former lawmaker, was found hanged in a hotel room in the coastal Chinese city of Zhuhai near Macau on Sunday, Macau government spokeswoman Elena Au said.

"It is suspected that he has committed suicide since he was found hanged in the room," Au said. She declined to elaborate, saying Ho's family wanted to keep details private.

Hong Kong and Macau media reported that Ho committed suicide and that Zhuhai police had ruled out foul play.

Ho was removed as president of Macau's Consumer Council eight months ago amid a graft scandal. He led the council for about 20 years.

Ho, 62, was accused of abusing his power to help a relative win construction works and purchase contracts totaling 6 million patacas ($751,438) since 2004, according to the Commission Against Corruption of Macau. No charges have been filed.
