Hewlett-Packard China PC shipments double, IDC says

Hewlett-Packard Co., the world largest computer vendor, more than doubled third-quarter shipments in China, while Asustek Computer Inc. climbed to third spot in the notebook market, research firm IDC said.

Hewlett-Packard accounted for 18.4 percent of the overall China PC market, up from 11.6 percent a year earlier, Bryan Ma, IDC director of personal systems research for Asia, said in a phone interview, citing estimates released Tuesday. Lenovo Group Ltd. maintained its lead, with 29.4 percent of the Chinese market, unchanged from a year earlier, he said.

China 28 percent growth in computer shipments last quarter helped drive the 2.3 percent increase in the global PC market amid the global recession. Palo Alto, California-based Hewlett-Packard gain in China outpaced increases in the U.S, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“Hewlett-Packard is doing well across all sectors, helped by its aggressive price competition,” Ma said Tuesday.” Asustek was helped by heavy promotion with major retailers, as well as new products and payment programs with China merchants.”

Asustek notebook shipments in China almost doubled to 12.1 percent of the market as it overtook Dell Inc. for third spot, Ma said. The Taiwanese company is the fifth-biggest computer vendor in China, behind Founder Holdings Ltd. Acer Inc., the world second-largest PC vendor, is sixth overall in China and fifth in notebooks, he said.

Lenovo added 0.2 percent to HK$4.67 as of 11:52 a.m. in Hong Kong, Asustek climbed 0.9 percent to NT$65, compared with a 0.2 percent decline in Taiwan benchmark TAIEX index.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell, which relies on the Americas for more of its sales than any other top-four PC vendor, posted the slowest growth among China six largest suppliers, with a 19 percent increase.

China, the world fastest-growing major economy, will post annual PC shipment growth of 18 percent over the next five years to overtake the U.S. as the largest computer market globally by 2013, Ma said.

Notebooks accounted for 48 percent of computers sold in China during the third quarter, up from 36 percent a year earlier, Ma said. Laptop shipments climbed 71 percent from a year earlier, led by 143 percent growth at Hewlett-Packard and 97 percent at Asustek, Ma said.

Lenovo increased laptop shipments in China by 59 percent, while Dell gained 29 percent, he said.
