China mulls economic belt along Yellow River

China is considering a plan to establish a coastal economic belt in East China's Shandong Province, a provincial official said at a high-profile think tank summit in Beijing on Saturday.

The National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top planning agency, is studying the feasibility of setting up the Yellow River delta economic area, Wang Junmin, vice governor of Shandong Province, said.

The central government gave the go-ahead last week to the Liaoning economic belt. Previously, the country has approved coastal areas in east China's Jiangsu, the Beibu Bay in Guangxi and the economic zone on the western side of Taiwan Straits in Fujian province.

To cope with the current economic crisis, Shandong Province, one of the country's economic powerhouses, has invested some 1.3 trillion yuan (US$190.3 billion) in more than 4,000 projects.
