Foreign debt rises 1.5% to US$327.8 billion

HONG KONG -- China’s foreign debt rose 1.5 percent by June 30 from the end of 2006 to US$327.8 billion, the government said. Short-term debt climbed 0.7 percent to US$184.9 billion, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange said on its Web site Saturday.

Such loans accounted for 56 percent of the country’s outstanding foreign debt. Medium-and long-term debt increased 2.6 percent to US$142.9 billion, the statement said, comprising 44 percent of China’s overseas debt.
