Hopes fade for eighteen trapped miners in China

BEIJING -- Rescuers held out little hope Monday for the survival of 18 trapped miners in a northern China mine, five days after the outbreak of a fire that has left three dead, an official said. “The fire has not been put out yet, so the rescuers are not able to go down into the mine (to carry out rescue operations),” an official with the state administration of work safety told AFP.

“Normally, a fire in a coal mine can last for a long time. There is very little possibility for them to survive.” The official also said that 18 miners were missing in the Huquangou coal mine in Shanxi province, not 15 as reported in state press reports on Sunday.
