TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, has teamed up with U.S.-based InFocus Corp. to manufacture smartphones, and for the first time will participate in the promotion and distribution of the new phones.
The phones are said to have "high-end quality with a mid-range price." It is part of Hon Hai's new plan dubbed "Sea of Phones." The plan is directed by Hon Hai's subsidiary FIH Mobile. Hon Hai plans to first roll out the phones in Taiwan and then in mainland China.
Hon Hai is for the first time trying to build a smartphone brand image and participate in phone distribution. This is also the first time the company has been involved in smartphone contract work for InFocus. Hon Hai will engage in the distribution and promotion of the phones normally performed by telecommunication companies.
Hon Hai previously acquired Commtiva, which is in charge of the phone distribution. Commtiva was a global company specializing in the development and supply of mobile and fixed wireless devices for the telecoms and telemetric industries.

Hon Hai previously collaborated with InFocus to manufacturer a 40-inch monitor. It has worked with InFocus to produce two different smartphone models.
The IN610 model has a 6.07-inch sized screen with 1280x720 resolution, and has MediaTek's MT6589 Quad processor, 8-megapixel rear lens and and 1.3-megapixel front lens, 4050mAh battery which can run for one month in standby mode, and support WiFi connection. The phones are priced at between NT$10,000 and NT$14,000. A product launch conference is scheduled to be held next Tuesday. They are scheduled to be put on the market in August. Tens of millions of new phones are expected to be rolled out, local sources said.
More Phones from Hon Hai
Hon Hai has also secured several contract orders with its old customer Apple. The Taiwanese company is the sole manufacturing contractor for the iPhone 5S as well as iPad mini 2. In addition, the company has secured contract orders for low-end iPhones. Hon Hai has become Apple's largest electronics parts supplier.
Hon Hai is also manufacturing phones on behalf of Chinese brands Xiaomi and Huawei. Volumes of phones under these two brands are expected to be rolled out on the market in the second half of the year.
Hon Hai is traded as Foxconn Technology Group. Hon Hai Group founder and Chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) said earlier that "Foxconn will never give up manufacturing, and the company will undergo a restructuring process." He said that "the Chinese market is just beginning to take off, and there is still much potential. Foxconn will also enter medicine, environment and energy industries."
