Emerging markets cited as future of Taiwan LED industry

Lu Shao-hsu, senior analyst with the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), made the remarks during a summit yesterday held by the trade group.

According to PIDA, Taiwan's LED industry will experience modest growth this year, after seeing a decline in LED packaging and module production, which dropped 5 percent last year compared to 2011. Taiwan's global market share meanwhile fell from 21 percent to 19 percent.

This year, production value is expected to grow 6 percent, which is less than the 7 percent for Japan and 8 percent for Korea, Lu said.

“As you can see, the industry's performance this year is expected to be lukewarm,” he said. “A huge sales growth is unlikely for most LED firms, which will instead focus more on profitability.”

According to him, Taiwan LED operators' future is not in China, which is already saturated with LED manufacturers both from China as well as from other countries.

Instead, growth potential is bigger in emerging markets, especially Turkey and India, he said.

“Turkey has a geographical advantage, as it is an important trading hub for Asian and European firms,” he said. “India, meanwhile, is going through a replacement cycle in which people switch from traditional lightbulbs to LED ones.”
