For transaction amounts under NT$3,000, it will still be the same “wave, pay and go” consumer experience; for amounts over NT$3,000, a signature is required to give cardholders peace of mind. The new measure will be implemented in phases, with the majority of Visa payWave merchants providing support for this new service now.
Since its launch in 2005, Visa Taiwan has been a pioneer in bringing innovative, convenient and secure payment solutions for local cardholders.
To date, 16 financial institutions have issued Visa credit cards with the Visa payWave contactless payment function in Taiwan. The number of Visa payWave card readers has also grown to over 24,000 in more than 13,800 merchant outlets, spanning 11 categories including pharmaceutical and cosmetic shops, dining and entertainment venues, supermarkets, transit and a wide range of retailers. The top three preferred merchant categories for making Visa payWave payments in Taiwan are wholesale outlets, pharmacy and cosmetics shops as well as high-speed rail stations.
