TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 500 60-inch LCD TVs jointly offered by Hon Hai and RadioShack sold out in two and half hours on online portal Yahoo!Kimo yesterday, said Cyber 3C, the retail arm of Hon Hai.
The sale began on Yahoo!Kimo at 11 a.m., and by 1:30 p.m. all 500 TVs were gone.
The promotion was to last till Dec. 27. With all the TVs already out, Cyber 3C may get more TVs and put them up for sale today and tomorrow, it said.
The TVs were sold under the RadioShack brand and were stand-alones offered at NT$58,800 each. The business model differs from the one used with Chunghwa Telecom and Kbro, through which customers may get the TVs bundled with the operators' monthly plans, at NT$38,800 per TV.
According to Cyber 3C, the three-day sale was a warm-up for the launch of the retailer's own e-commerce portal on Dec. 27.
Cyber 3C said the site will feature products that are unique and of interest to consumers. "We won't put up everything on the site like a giant garage sale," it said.
The 60-inch TVs were popular not only in the virtual world but in the physical world as well. Earlier this month, Chunghwa Telecom said it had already seen sales surpass 2,000, higher than the 1,000 the firm had hoped for. By the end of the year a total of 5,000 units may be sold, it said.
