HTC becomes smartphone of 2 Euro soccer leagues

TAIPEI -- HTC Corp. said yesterday that it has struck a partnership deal with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) that will see the company become the official global smartphone supplier of the association's two soccer leagues for three years.

Starting from January, HTC will be the exclusive phone supplier of two of the world's most elite soccer competitions — the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, the Taiwanese smartphone company said in a press statement.

The statement quoted HTC CEO Peter Chou as saying that the company is "excited to partner with one of the leading sporting brands in the world."

"We'll be working closely with UEFA to offer football experiences to all fans in addition to providing a richer overall mobile experience," Chou added.

Under the new partnership, HTC will deliver new and innovative ways for soccer fans around the world to get closer to the action, whether they are in the stadium watching the game or viewing content on HTC devices, the statement said.

For his part, UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino was quoted as saying that the partnership will enable UEFA and HTC to promote European club soccer to a worldwide audience and bring new opportunities for global fans to engage with the competitions.

"We value the support and commitment of HTC and anticipate that their involvement with these competitions will increase the profile of the brand on a global scale," Infantino added.

As part of the partnership with the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, HTC will also be the official global smartphone supplier partner of the UEFA Super Cup Final in 2013 and 2014, and the UEFA Women's Champions League Final in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

HTC said it hopes to combine with its UEFA partnership its tradition of working with global leaders in the fields of music, imaging, design and sport to bring fresh mobile experiences to consumers around the world.

UEFA is the administrative body for soccer in Europe and to a certain extent, Asia. It consists of more than 50 national association members.
