MediaTek unveils quad-core phone platform

MediaTek, a major integrated circuit (IC) designer, yesterday unveiled a quad-core smartphone platform that it said will be adopted by several models by the first quarter of next year.

The platform, MT6589, was introduced by MediaTek during simultaneous events in both Taipei and Shenzhen, China. The Shenzhen event was hosted by Lu Hsiang-cheng, MediaTek's Greater China chief executive, and the Taipei event was held by Ku Ta-wei, chief financial officer.

Lu started off his speech by citing the huge growth of smartphones globally. "According to data, global smartphone users totaled 1.038 billion during the third quarter, surpassing the 1-billion mark," he said. "As for China, smartphone sales are expected to total 185 million by the end of 2012, double the number for last year."

He further pointed out China's smartphone sales now account for 26.5 percent of the world total, and the figure is set to rise to 72 percent by 2016, making the country the world's biggest smartphone market.

Chinese-made smartphones now take a 60-percent market share in China, yet their profit margin is about just 1 percent, Lu said. "Chinese smartphone manufacturers are faced with challenges in technology, product design, marketing and profitability," he said.

According to Lu, MediaTek is strong at turnkey solutions that can help propel Chinese-made smartphones to the rest of the world. "An example of this is the MT6589 platform, a quad-core device that strikes the perfect balance between performance and power conservation," he said.
