Hon Hai declines to comment on Chunghwa's intention to buy TVs

Hon Hai yesterday declined to comment on Chunghwa Telecom's statement that it was thinking about purchasing the 60-inch LCD TVs made by the contract electronic manufacturing giant.

Chunghwa Telecom yesterday confirmed that it was interested in the TVs and were considering whether to purchase them from Hon Hai directly as a way to deepen ties with it.

Chunghwa, Taiwan's leading telecom operator, plans to buy 1,000 units in the first batch and will then consider whether to buy more, it said.

To this, Hon Hai responded by saying it does not comment on the business of its clients.

According to industry experts, Hon Hai will roll out the large-size TVs first in the United States, China and Taiwan, and then in emerging markets such as Indonesia and Brazil.

According to them, Hon Hai will team up with China's LETV to offer the television, which will include LETV's own contents as well as those from other providers. The company will also work with China Mobile for the TV's retail, experts said.

Other trade publications reported that Hon Hai has partnered up with Vizio and AT&T to sell the TVs in the North American market.

To those speculations, Hon Hai again declined to comment, only saying it was happy to satisfy the demands of clients and customers.

"Thanks to our vertical integration and superb management, we're able to lower production cost and develop high-quality, low-priced products," Hon Hai said.

According to industry experts, Hon Hai will not sell the TVs under its own brand. Rather it will create the "made by Hon Hai" image to attract customers.
