Toyota to suspend China output amid surge of anti-Japan sentiment

Toyota will shut down two of the three lines of its Tianjin plant for one week starting Monday, the Nikkei business daily reported. The third line will be idled for two days next week, it added.

The plant produced 500,000 units in 2011.

Japan's largest carmaker plans to slash Chinese production by half in October compared with a year earlier and it may cut output further in the coming months, the Nikkei said.

Sales in China by major Japanese carmakers plummeted in September from the same month last year. Toyota sold 44,100 vehicles in the world's second-largest economy in September, down 48.9 percent year-on-year.

Japan's purchase of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea sparked anti-Japan protests in many Chinese cities.

The Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands are also claimed by Taiwan and China, where they are known as Tiaoyutai and Diaoyu, respectively.
