TSMC posts record sales in August with revenue of NT$49.497 billion

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) yesterday posted record sales again in August, where the firm saw consolidated revenue of NT$49.497 billion, a rise of 2 percent month-on-month.

TSMC also predicted third quarter sales would be higher than what it had originally estimated.

The previous record the firm made was in July, in which the company had sales of NT$48.525 billion. Then, with strong demand from clients, the world's largest contract chip-maker again set records in August by reporting sales of NT$49.497 billion, a rise of 2 percent from July.

The firm had originally estimated sales for the July-September period would be between NT$136 billion and NT$138 billion, a rise of seven percent from the second quarter.

With a combined sales total of NT$98.022 billion in July and August alone, sales for the third quarter would exceed the firm's target, said Ho Li-mei, TSMC's chief finance officer.

Ho attributed the August sales increase to rush orders from clients and higher-than-expected revenue from the firm's photo mask business.

Separately, local media reported yesterday TSMC plans to up capital expenditure next year by 25 percent to US$10 billion to keep its leadership status in the contract chip manufacturing business.

According to a report by Economic Daily News, TSMC will increase capital expenditure to ready itself for processor orders from Apple and to make sure capacity is sufficient for major clients, such as Qualcomm.

The company said at this point it is not at liberty to discuss next year's capital expenditure, which the firm will announce in January of 2013.
