Asustek Computer Inc. ready to offer Nexus 7 in Taiwan; local consumers may begin to register

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. announced yesterday that local consumers can begin to register for the Nexus 7, its co-branded tablet computer with Google Inc.

The country's electronics retail stores and the top three carriers, including Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan Mobile Co. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., started taking pre-orders for the 7-inch gadget on the day, Asustek said in a statement.

The 16GB model will be priced at NT$8,990 (US$301) in Taiwan, the company said, without giving any specifics on a launch date or a sale plan for the 8GB model.

At an investors' conference on Aug. 29, Asustek CEO Jerry Shen explained that the Nexus 7 will be priced higher in some European and Asian countries than in the United States because a consumption tax is included.
