Integrated circuit industry to see yearly growth: SPIL head

The integrated circuit (IC) testing and packaging industry, as well as contract chip manufacturing, will continue to grow over the next few years, despite the fact this year has been bumpy for IC players, said Lin Wen-po, chairman of Siliconware Precision Industries Ltd. (SPIL), yesterday.

Lin made the remarks during the shareholders' meeting of SPIL, a leading IC testing and packaging operator.

"The European debt crisis has yet to be resolved, and a slowdown is lingering in major developed nations. Whether the slump will spill into emerging markets remains to be seen," he said. "Worse, China's slowed growth is expected to lead to a decline in exports. Raw materials will also see a price drop."

Yet he remained upbeat, saying a sense of optimism has been expressed by most of the firm's clients. With surging popularity of smartphones and tablet PCs, demands for IC testing and packaging will continue to grow over the next few years, he said.

He added SPIL is expected to hit its second-quarter targets of having sales growth of 7 to 11 percent compared to the first quarter and gross profit margin of 16 to 18 percent. For the second half, the firm is expecting monthly sales growth of over NT$6 billion, while gross profit margin exceeding 20 percent.

Shareholders meanwhile recognized the firm's results last year, during which the firm posted sales of NT$61.237 billion. They also approved to distribute cash dividends of NT$1.42 a share.
