Bad economy is no excuse for aid cuts: UN secretary-general

VIENNA--The U.N. secretary-general says economic uncertainty is no excuse for backing away from pledges to reduce global poverty.

World leaders agreed in 2000 to a set of ambitious goals for cutting poverty and disease and improving health care and education for the world's poor by 2015.

Ban Ki-moon says that if US$20 trillion can quickly be mobilized to deal with the economic crisis, there can be little excuse for not finding funds to meet the so-called Millennium Development Goals.

Ban, in remarks prepared for delivery Saturday in the Alpine village of Alpbach, said fiscal prudence and measures to protect the vulnerable can coexist.
