Global semiconductor sales may climb 12% in 2010, WSTS says

Global semiconductor sales will probably rise more than expected next year, chip industry association WSTS Inc. said Tuesday.

Chip sales may increase 12.2 percent to US$246.9 billion in 2010, beating a June estimate for 7.3 percent growth, according to a statement from the San Jose, California-based group. WSTS expects semiconductor revenue to fall 11.5 percent to US$220.1 billion this year. Memory-chip sales may rise 18.6 percent to US$50.9 billion next year, WSTS said.

WSTS joins the Semiconductor Industry Association in forecasting a steeper market recovery next year helped by demand for the devices used in personal computers and mobile phones. Intel Corp., the world's biggest chip-maker, last month forecast fourth-quarter sales that beat analyst estimates by as much as US$1 billion, citing a rebound in demand for semiconductors used in PCs.

Semiconductor-industry sales are projected to rise 10.2 percent next year, after falling 11.6 percent in 2009, San Jose, California-based SIA said earlier this month. The group in June forecast revenue will grow 6.5 percent in 2010.

El Segundo California-based ISuppli Corp. in September forecast global semiconductor sales will rise 13.8 percent next year, after falling 16.5 percent in 2009. The industry will return to its 2007 revenue level in 2012, with sales reaching US$282.7 billion yen in that period, the researcher said.
