EasyJet is preparing for Brexit by heading to Vienna

VIENNA -- British budget airline easyJet plans to set up a new company on the European mainland so that it can keep flying between EU destinations even after Britain has left the bloc, the carrier said on Friday.

It wants to locate its easyJet Europe company in Vienna and has applied for the necessary licences in Austria.

This will allow the airline to "keep offering flights from within the European Union to all of Europe and within EU countries - irrespective of the outcome of a future aviation agreement between Britain and the EU," the company said.

"That's an honor for Austria," Austrian Transport Minister Joerg Leichtfried said in a statement.

"We are currently examining the application and we will decide soon," he added.

EasyJet said its new structure would be made up of three subsidiary companies in Austria, Switzerland and Britain.
