German industrial output down in August as key sectors falter: data

Industrial production contracted by 0.5 percent in August compared with output in July, the economy ministry said in a statement.

The drop was in line with analysts' expectations after output had expanded by 1.2 percent month-on-month in July.

Construction output fell by 2.8 percent in August and manufacturing output was down 0.5 percent, the ministry calculated.

Energy output, on the other hand, grew by 1.5 percent, the data showed.

Data released on Friday showed that industrial orders in Germany declined by a bigger-than-expected 1.3 percent in August, adding to evidence that Europe's economic engine is losing steam as the eurozone debt crisis weighs.
