TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Acer Inc. (宏碁) founder and Honorary Chairman Stan Shih (施振榮) announced yesterday that Acer was expanding into the telecommunications market globallys.
Shih said during a press conference that Acer's telecommunications branch would allow Acer to emerge from its comfort zone of producing hardware.
Currently, the global industry has reached the level of Industry 4.0. However, as Shih said, the exchange of mobile devices remained at the level of Industry 2.0 or 3.0.
Therefore, there is great potential for growth in this sector, something that Acer will capitalize on, he said.
Shih laid out Acer's strategy, saying that the brand would start in Taiwan and then, once it had a firm foundation, expand to Asia, Europe, and other regions where Acer's name was well-known.
But Shih maintains that the company must be cautious as it looks forward to investment opportunities.
Shih pointed to Acer's investments in smart cars, smartwatches, and pet-related products, for which the company has begun to reap financial rewards. Overall, the investments are expected to yield up to US$100 million.
Shih called a meeting yesterday morning with Hiwin Technologies Corp. (上銀科技), Advantech Co. Ltd. (研華) and eight other companies that make up an intellectual technology association to sign a contract that would solidify their partnerships and expedite the process through which IT solutions can be used to solve agricultural and medical issues.
Shih is looking to innovations from this contract to aid Acer in the added value department.
"While Acer has good brand recognition, it is lacking in added value," Shih said.
