EVA Air's ousted chairman set to launch new carrier, says associate

TAIPEI -- Chang Kuo-wei (張國煒), a former chairman of EVA Airways Corp., who was removed from his post earlier this year in a family succession war, is in the process of establishing a new airline company, a close associate confirmed Wednesday.

Chang has already registered the new company with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), according to Neih Kuo-wei, a close associate of Chang who declined to give any details about the carrier except to say that it will named Hsing Yu in Chinese.

Both EVA Air and China Airlines extended congratulations to Chang after hearing the news of the new airline.

Chang became chairman of EVA Airways in January 2011 but when his father, Evergreen Group founder Chang Jung-fa (張榮發), died in January, a war of succession erupted among the children and Chang Kuo-wei was eventually removed from the chairman post.

He was replaced by Steve Lin, a long-serving executive in the Evergreen Group, and no longer holds any executive position on the group.
