HTC market share in US dives to 2-year low despite One M8 launch

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- -- HTC Corp.'s (宏達電) share of the United States smartphone market crashed in the second quarter to its lowest point since mid-2012 despite the launch of its newest flagship phone, the One M8.
In the April-June quarter, HTC remained the fifth-largest smartphone vendor in the U.S. with a 4.8-percent share, representing a sharp decline from the 12 percent it had in the third quarter of 2012, when it made third place, according to a report published last week by market research firm comScore Inc.
Apple Inc. held the top position and extended its market share to 42.1 percent in the last quarter, while second-place Samsung Electronics Co. also gained market share to end up with 28.6 percent.
LG Electronics Inc. ranked third but saw its share drop 0.3 percentage points to 6.4 percent, followed by Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. in fourth, with a decline of 0.5 percentage points to 5.9 percent, comScore said.
The second-quarter data also showed that 173 million U.S. residents over the age of 13 owned smartphones, comprising 71.6 percent of all mobile phone subscribers in the country.
HTC's second-quarter operating profit totaled NT$2.43 billion (US$80.9 million), rising from NT$2 billion in operating loss in the first quarter and emerging from three consecutive quarters in the red.
But the Taoyuan-based company reported sales of NT$10.6 billion for July, the lowest in five months and the third-lowest this year, meaning it may need to shorten the life cycle of its flagship HTC One M8, launched just this past March, to introduce new momentum with a replacement.
