TAIPEI -- The HTC Desire 816, a mid-range model sold by Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC Corp., ranked as the best seller in Taiwan's smartphone market in June, knocking Asustek Computer Inc.'s (華碩電腦) ZenFone 5 out of the top spot, according to the latest figures.
The ZenFone 5 was second followed by HTC's flagship model the HTC M8, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.'s (鴻海精密) InFocus M210, China-based Xiaomi Corp.'s (小米科技) Hongmi and Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5S, according to statistics released Tuesday by industry sources.
The HTC Desire 610 ranked as the seventh best seller during the month ahead of Japan-based Sony Corp.'s Xperia Z2, Asustek's ZenFone 6, and South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy Note 3.
Analysts said most of the 10 best-selling smartphones in Taiwan in June carried a price tag of less than NT$10,000 (US$333) and some were even priced at under NT$4,000.
They said while these models were more affordable, they also came with high-end specifications, which is why Taiwanese consumers preferred them over others.
Overall, HTC took the top spot in sales volume in Taiwan's smartphone market in June with a 22 percent share, ahead of Samsung's 15 percent and Asustek's 13 percent, the statistics showed.
HTC also ranked No. 1 in smartphone sales revenues in Taiwan in June with a 29 percent share, followed by Samsung at 21 percent and Sony at 15 percent, according to the statistics.
Analysts said that although HTC performed well in Taiwan in the second quarter, there remain concerns that its shipments in the third quarter could be affected by the launch of the next generation of iPhone, likely in September.
HTC is scheduled to hold an investor conference Thursday to detail its second quarter results and give sales guidance for the third quarter.
