E-shops should be able to sell contact lenses: Tung

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Pegatron Corp. (和碩聯合) chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) attended a 4G smart device summit yesterday, suggesting that the government should allow customers who have a prescription and are in the company's member database to purchase their contact lenses online.

Tung said that Pegatron's subsidiary Pegatron Corp. (晶碩光學) was recently criticized for selling contact lenses illegally through apps on mobile devices. The government should make online contact lens shopping legal under certain conditions, Tung argued.

He also indicated that whether the 4G LTE network can be universally adopted by customers depends on whether or not it can satisfy demand. Full adoption of 4G service is about striking a balance among calling rates, service quality and efficient high-speed communication.

Tung emphasized that "4G LTE can provide faster and higher flow of communication traffic than 3G LTE, and users can watch high-quality films with mobile devices that are unlikely to disconnect." Furthermore, he said that 4G's attraction for consumers will affect the service's popularity. Calling rate, quality and efficiency are major factors, Tung said.

"Mobile operators should run their business from the standpoint of benefiting customers first," said Tung. They own immense funds after all, so they can provide for many operational needs. By benefiting customers, telecommunication companies may also upgrade their 4G service to serve smartphone users more adequately.

However, small- and medium-sized enterprises are the main forces that support Taiwan's economy. The convenience brought by higher 4G transmission speeds will enable companies to provide a wider range of services and also create more business opportunities.
