MediaTek to grow R&D operations in S'pore

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- MediaTek Inc. (聯發科), one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit designers, said Wednesday that it is planning to expand its research and development in Singapore and set up an innovation center in the city state.

MediaTek said it is committed to spending S$250 million (US$200 million) over the next six years to expand its R&D operations there.

The IC designer added that the center will focus on development of applications to explore business opportunities in the consumer, medical and Internet of Things areas.

It said the funds will be spent largely on a wide range of high-end IC development, such as high-speed central processing units and graphics processing units.

MediaTek's subsidiary in the city state — MediaTek Singapore — was set up in 2004. Since then, the Taiwanese company has poured more than S$180 million into the unit and currently employs 250 people.

The parent company said that MediaTek Singapore is also serving as a egional hub for logistics and as an information technology operations and management center.

In addition to expanding its R&D operations in Singapore, the Taiwanese fabless IC supplier said it will forge closer cooperation ties with academia there in a bid to foster a talent pool for future technology development.

MediaTek announced that it will set up a MediaTek Endowed Professorship at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), saying that it will allow the appointment of a leading expert to work on cutting-edge IC design.

In the past 10 years, MediaTek has provided more than 25 scholarships to students at universities in Singapore for their pursuit of undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in IC design.
