Taiwan hotels, restaurants ramp up for World Cup

TAIPEI -- Yesterday's kick-off event for the World Cup in Brazil went well, as did events in Taiwan, half a world away.

Capricciosa, a restaurant chain that serves Italian cuisine, was offering up a soccer ball-shaped calzone sprinkled with pepperoni, chicken and bacon to kick off celebrations for World Cup.

Hsu Li-lin, an executive at Capricciosa, said a lot of fans made early reservations, and the restaurant expects 50 percent more business than usual over the World Cup period.

Brass Monkey, a sports bar in Taipei, plans to extend its business hours to include the games, the first of which put host country Brazil against Croatia at 3:30 a.m., yesterday.

The popular pub is charging a minimum of NT$750 (US$25) per person for presale seating tickets.

Not to be outdone, Der Lowe Bavarian, a German restaurant in downtown Taipei, is rolling out a 2 kilogram soccer ball-shaped sausage that serves 20. Prices for some of its beers will be discounted by half for 10 minutes after every goal scored by the German team, the restaurant said.

The nearby Grand Hyatt Taipei is setting up a screen in its lobby for the championship game today, charging NT$650 per person for admission.

Several hotels around Taiwan are also offering discounts or special offers to attract soccer fans; with an 11-hour difference between Taiwan and Brazil, many are ready to stay up all night to catch the games.
