China handset maker OPPO taps local market

TAIPEI -- OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp. made its Taiwan debut Wednesday with the launch of its flagship smartphone, the Find 7, as part of the Chinese handset maker's overseas expansion program.

The Find 7 boasts a 5.5-inch display with a 2K resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz processor, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 3,000 mAh battery that enables fast charging.

The 4G device will be available locally in the third quarter of this year through Chunghwa Telecom Co., the country's biggest wireless carrier, at a cost of NT$16,990 (US$566).

Founded in 2004 as a manufacturer of MP3 players and Blu-ray video players, OPPO began overseas expansion of its smartphone business in 2013 by tapping into Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

OPPO expects overseas revenue to account for more than 50 percent of its total sales within three years as the company continues to expand its product offerings to meet consumer demand in overseas markets, said Sky Lee, general manager of OPPO's overseas mobile business division.

"2014 will be a year in which we will put more emphasis on overseas markets," Lee said at the product launch, adding that his company has set a development roadmap that includes more markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and America.

The Guangdong-based company shipped about 20 million smartphones last year in China for a 5 percent market share, Lee said. He declined to give a shipment target for this year.

Heaven Ho, general manager of OPPO's Taiwan branch, said the company has set up three local offices in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, respectively, with the aim of improving its communications with Taiwanese consumers.

OPPO plans to set up direct stores in the three special municipalities in the future to provide better after-sales services for local customers, Ho added.
