Wistron partners with Dell to develop computers made of recycled plastics

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese contract laptop maker Wistron Corp. (緯創) has partnered up with longtime customer Dell Inc. to work on a sustainable solution for electronic waste recycling — by building waste into new computers.

Wistron said in a Tuesday press release that, for the first time, its third-party certified “closed-loop” recycled plastics are being used to make computers for the U.S. brand's upcoming computer line.

Closed-loop recycling is a production process in which post consumer waste is collected and reused to make new products to achieve goals in green practices and waste reduction.

Wistron said its project with Dell will create an industry precedent for dealing with e-waste, and the company expects their efforts will make a lasting contribution to the planet.

“This initiative is designed to reduce the dependence on natural resources as well as extending the value of end-of-life electronics,” Wistron Chairman and CEO Simon Lin (林憲銘) said in the press release.

Wistron said its subsidiary Wistron GreenTech, based in the U.S. state of Texas, collects, sorts and refines circuit boards and batteries utilizing environmentally sound technologies.

Another facility called Wistron Advanced Materials in Kunshan (昆山), China is a post-consumer resin recycler and compounder which supplies recycled plastic materials to Wistron's brand customers, the parent company said.

“Wistron's dedication in developing electronics recycling technology is an innovative and strategic approach to minimize waste and maximize post-consumer materials. We are pleased to see our green recycling solutions helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals,” Lin said.
