In an earnings conference, digital camera contract manufacturer Altek Co. (華晶科) yesterday reported encouraging performance results over the first quarter of this year, citing earnings of NT$0.22, improving markedly over the minus NT$0.96 seen in the fourth quarter of last year.
Throughout last year Altek strived to transition toward the smartphone camera module market, generating revenues of NT$19.166 billion, incurring after-tax losses of NT$332 million, or NT$0.88 per share, while marking the first annual performance in the red since the company's listing on the TWSE.
In the first quarter of this year, the company's revenues reached NT$3.804 million, which despite a 5.23-percent year-on-year decline, yielded after-tax net income of NT$81.7 million, propelled by a 8.12-percent rise in profit margins.
The company yesterday stated that stellar first-quarter results represent the fruits of its transition from a digital camera contract manufacturer to a smartphone photography solutions provider. Most notably, the company recently supplied camera modules for two high-profile flagship smartphones, such as the Duo Camera featured on HTC's M8 handset capable of unparalleled depth-sensing image attributes.
In addition, the company stated that amid heightened competition, suppliers must differentiate themselves and offer clients unique solutions. In the heatedly contested global smartphone arena, device makers are no longer pursuing a straight-forward arms race in offering the latest upgrade in hardware specifications, and are attracting consumers by creating products that cater to different user preferences, said company CEO Alex Hsia (夏汝文). While the camera on HTC's M8 handset features the innovative depth-sensing Duo Camera setup, Altek's design for another flagship handset's camera focuses on providing vibrant color reproduction and excellent photo imaging in low-light conditions.
