HTC One M8 demand exceeding supply

TAIPEI -- HTC (宏達電) Corp.'s flagship smartphone, the HTC One M8, is facing strong demand following its initial launch in several Asian countries that has exceeded supplies of the device, a company executive said yesterday.

The initial sales performance of the M8 has outperformed that of the HTC One in the same period of last year, giving the Taiwanese company more confidence that its second-quarter sales will be higher than expected, said Jack Tong, head of China operations and president of HTC North Asia.

HTC intends to launch the M8 in more Asian countries from the middle of May, including Vietnam and Japan, as part of the second wave of its roll-out plan, Tong told a press briefing.

Asked about sales in the Taiwan market, Tong said that HTC did well last month in the high-end market, thanks to the strong consumer demand for the M8, the HTC One and the HTC Butterfly S models.

He said the company's April sales could be as good as they were in the same month of last year.

According to data from local research firms, HTC held a roughly 30 percent share of Taiwan's smartphone revenue in April 2013 to rank as the country's top vendor for the month.

HTC shares closed up 7 percent at NT$169 (US$5.61) Monday in Taipei, the highest level for nearly 10 months. The company is scheduled to host an earnings conference call the following day to provide a briefing on its latest quarterly results.
