Chromebooks to hit 3-4% market penetration in '14

TAIPEI -- Adoption of Google Inc.'s web-based Chromebook computers could hit three to four percent of the global market this year, according to a local market research firm, which predicts sustained growth for the search engine's answer to Windows-based computing.

Taiwanese firm WitsView gave the positive outlook based on three perceived advantages of the laptops running Chrome OS.

In addition to affordable price points, the adoption of the machines in the educational market has helped develop future clients, while strong data security and up-to date features are attractive to enterprises, said Caroline Chen, an assistant research manager at WitsView.

The penetration of Chromebooks looks ready to pick up as clients become more and more reliant on Google services, Chen said. Many major brands have started developing their own Chromebooks, and more retail channels have boosted product exposure and consumer choice.
