Chunghwa top among Taiwan's carriers in Feb. earnings

TAIPEI -- Chunghwa Telecom Co. (中華電信) was the top carrier among Taiwan's three largest telecom service suppliers in February in terms of earnings per share (EPS), according statistics compiled by the companies.
Chunghwa Telecom recorded a year-on-year 17.5 percent increase in sales for February generated from its mobile Internet services, which lent support to its bottom line.
The telecom operator posted earnings of NT$3.61 billion (US$119 million) in February, down 4.7 percent from a year earlier, and an EPS of NT$0.47.
Its two major competitors, Taiwan Mobile Co. (台灣大哥大) and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. (遠傳電信), posted NT$0.45 and NT$0.31 in EPS respectively.
In February, Chunghwa Telecom's consolidated sales fell 5 percent from a year earlier to NT$18.29 billion, while its operating profit fell 4.7 percent year-on-year to NT$4.33 billion, the company reported.
Its voice data sales for February dropped 12.7 percent from a year earlier after the company launched an intense promotional campaign that included wide discounts, while its cell phone sales declined 6.5 percent year-on-year.
Taiwan Mobile's January EPS Outshines Peers
Taiwan Mobile, meanwhile, posted NT$1.2 billion in net profit in February on consolidated sales of NT$8.9 billion. The company said its February sales rose 4.3 percent from a year earlier as its telecom and cable TV operations continued to grow.
For its part, Far EasTone posted NT$1.02 billion in net profit after recording NT$7.30 billion in consolidated sales.
In the first two months of the year, Taiwan Mobile was the most profitable telecom operator in terms of EPS among the three, recording NT$2.74 billion in net profit or NT$1.02 in EPS. Its consolidated sales for the two-month period totaled NT$18.89 billion.
The company said sales and net profit in the two months accounted for 68 percent and 70 percent of its forecasted sales and net profit respectively, for the first quarter.
In the two-month period, Chunghwa Telecom posted NT$7.07 billion in net profit or NT$0.91 in EPS. The company said its net profit during that period made up 19.7 percent of its projected net profit for the whole 2014.
For its part, Far EasTone posted NT$1.99 billion in net profit, or NT$0.61 in EPS for the two month period, which comprised 18.2 percent of its forecasted net profit for the year.
