HTC remains number 2 smartphone brand in Taiwanese market: survey

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp. retained its status as the second-most popular smartphone brand in the local market in 2013, although its market share shrank slightly, according to the results of a newly released survey.

The poll, released by AppWorks Ventures and the Taiwan Digital Convergence Development Association, found that HTC held a 25.8 percent share of the local smartphone market, down 0.4 percentage points from the previous year, amid fierce competition.

Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea remained the most popular smartphone brand in Taiwan, with a market share of 27.4 percent at the end of last year, the same level as 2012, the results show.

American electronics giant Apple Inc. also posted a 0.4 percentage point year-on-year decline to 19.4 percent in its local smartphone market share.

Sony Mobile Communications, the mobile unit of Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp., meanwhile, jumped 3.7 percentage points to 13.3 percent, retaining fourth place.

In terms of operating systems, Google Inc.'s Android dominated the market with a share of over 70 percent, followed by Apple with 20 percent and Microsoft Corp.'s Windows with 4 percent.

The survey also found that only 16.5 percent of smartphone users use their devices to make purchases, as many are either not used to the concept or consider mobile shopping to lack security.

Nearly 20 percent of the respondents said they found the concept of shopping with a smartphone less appealing than online shopping using a computer.

The survey, conducted by pollsters Trend Survey and Research Co. between Dec. 22, 2013 and Jan. 5 this year, was based on 1,508 valid samples from people aged over 20. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
