TSMC joins National Cheng Kung University in unveiling R&D center

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A brand new semiconductor research and development center was yesterday unveiled on National Cheng Kung University's (NCKU) Tzu-Chiang Campus as part of an academia-industry cooperation project between the Tainan-based university and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Yesterday's ceremony was hosted by NCKU President Hwung Hwung-hweng (黃煌煇) and TSMC CTO Sun Yuan-cheng (孫元成), who is also vice president of his company's research and development arm.

To celebrate the occasion, TSMC gifted the university with a 12-inch wafer.

NCKU said that the center will work on advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology, develop equipment and cultivate talent.

Both the university and the company aim to request more research funds from the National Science Council (國科會) and other relevant government branches, in order to help the university become a major semiconductor R&D nexus in Southern Taiwan.

NCKU said that both itself and TSMC will allocate funds and come up with research topics in order to spread pressure equally between the two and turn out substantial results.
