CTBC Charity Foundation tries to create a drug-free world for kids

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In an effort to create drug-free learning environments for young people, the CTBC Charity Foundation (中國信託慈善基金會) recently invited the Drug Enforcement Administration Education Foundation (DEA), a U.S.-based charity, to hold a forum on the prevention of drug abuse on school campuses.

CTBC Charity Foundation (中國信託慈善基金會) said the situation of drug abuse among youngsters has done great harm and it is time to make the public aware of the issue.

Local government officials as well as social welfare groups attended the foundation's forum to discuss how to prevent drug abuse more effectively. This is the first time a private local enterprise gathered a forum on such a scale to exchange opinions about anti-drug education.

Jeffrey J. L. Koo, Jr. (辜仲諒), chairman of the Chinatrust Charity Foundation, said that aside from raising funds, the foundation has been sending volunteer teachers and financial management specialists to help children from disadvantaged families for years.

Based on reports from these volunteers, the foundation found out that drug abuse had become more serious, and therefore organized the forum and invited the DEA specialist to offer advice, Koo said.

Koo vowed to support government efforts to root out drug abuse in Taiwan. Koo said that he believes there must be some solutions that could help eradicate drug abuse in Taiwan.

It is important to create a world without drug problems for the next generation, Koo said.
