The country's largest fixed-line operator by subscribers posted unaudited profit of 10.21 billion yuan (US$1.67 billion) for the first half, compared with 8.81 billion yuan for the same period last year.
Revenue jumped 14.1 percent to 157.52 billion yuan, the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.
But it decided not to pay an interim dividend, citing uncertainties over domestic regulatory policies and plans to speed up the expansion of its 3G services.
The number of 3G subscribers in the first half jumped 26.5 percent, or 18.28 million, to 87.33 million.
