TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Zoetis Taiwan's pet health app has surpassed 10,000 downloads, with the company recently holding a pet care event to promote heartworm prevention during warm summer months.
Zoetis Taiwan General Manager William Hung (洪崇祐) said at the prevention event that the infection possibility of canine heartworm, which may lead to sudden death or permanent heart or lung injuries, often surges 50 percent in summer months.
According to a veterinarian at the event, most pet keepers believe their pet dogs will be immune from all infections, including rabies, if they're kept at home. Remaining at home, however, is not an effective prevention method to ward off mosquitoes, which have proven to be one of the main carriers of canine heartworm.
Hung said regular injections and environmental hygiene are the two of the most critical factors to help pet dogs fend off heartworm infections.
Zoetis is a subsidiary of Pfizer, the world's largest drugmaker, but with Pfizer's spin-off of its 83-percent interest in the firm, it is now a completely independent company, which produces most of the world's medicine and vaccinations for pets and livestock.
